An Open Diary

Passionate intensity,

It’s a complicated fusion.

We are catapulted toward death.

The mystique I adore is the beating heart of those who share my life.

This is their legacy, in obscene glances, laced in silver.

I like writing. I do this to amuse myself.

It’s my life and I only get one go round.

This was the result.

Like life, it’s tentative, fragile, and halting.

And these are the gorgeous memories.

And welcome home.

-Jeff “Critter” Newell, the fifth member of Angels and Airwaves

When we are close to death, we have the capacity to speak the greatest truths. Newell did just that, choosing to impart his love of music and his friends to the world with these precious few words. Written in his diary, they have now been disseminated by Tom DeLonge of Angels and Airwaves, Boxcar Racer, and blink-182. Newell’s profound introspection shows the far-reaching impact of a life well lived. Those who were touched by his work now spread his love like light.

Let us do the same.
